Bank Clerk Receives Commendation for Preventing Special Fraud Scheme

The Akita Chuo Police Station in Akita Prefecture awarded a certificate of appreciation to Satoko Hatakeyama, an employee at Mizuho Bank’s Akita Branch, for her attentive communication that successfully prevented a special fraud crime.

Her prompt observation and gentle inquiry during a routine window transaction protected an elderly resident’s assets.

Suspicion Raised by Inactive Account Renewal Request

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on June 29, when a male customer in his 80s visited the bank branch requesting to renew his account.

Noticing that the account had been inactive for many years, Ms. Hatakeyama politely asked for the reason behind the renewal. The customer replied that he needed it to “receive money.”

Uncovering Personal Information Requests via LINE

Sensing something unusual, Ms. Hatakeyama continued to converse with the customer and discovered that he had been communicating with an unfamiliar individual via the messaging app LINE. A closer look revealed that the stranger was attempting to extract personal information from him.

Recognizing the signs of a fraudulent scheme, Ms. Hatakeyama immediately consulted her supervisor, who promptly contacted the police, successfully stopping the scam in its tracks.

Dedication to Safeguard Customer Assets

On July 22, a ceremony was held at the Akita Chuo Police Station, where Chief Susumu Tsunoda presented the commendation to Ms. Hatakeyama.

Reflecting on her daily responsibilities, Ms. Hatakeyama commented:

“I always make it a point to ask for the reason whenever handling account openings or wire transfers. Thinking about protecting our customers’ assets, I want to continue handling cases collaboratively whenever any concerns arise.”

Summary: Vigilance and Communication as Community Defenses

This case highlights how routine, thoughtful communication at bank counters serves as a vital safeguard against fraud.

Authorities remind the public to exercise caution when receiving unexpected messages requesting personal details and to consult family members, financial institutions, or local police before taking action.
